The man moved aside to reveal a petite young woman standing behind him. “Hannah, this is my wife, Mary.”

A huge grin burst across Hannah’s face. “Mary,” she squealed, and she hugged her sister-in-law like a long-lost friend, even though they had never met. Finally letting go, Hannah seized the young woman’s hands and said, “Oh, let me look at you.” Mary seemed more girl than woman, perhaps about 15 or 16 years old, with some teenage acne and long, straight black hair emerging from underneath her head scarf. Her dark brown eyes revealed a maturity and intelligence that belied her youth. Although she wore a long, loose-fitting wool tunic that concealed most of the contours of her body, the large bulge near her stomach left no doubt that she would soon deliver her first child.

(The true story of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, from his diary)

Thursday, September 27, 1934.  I feel like a grown-up reindeer now. I’ve gotten a lot bigger the past several months. I don’t have my antlers yet—Mama says I won’t get those until at least next year—and I’m not as big as Daddy, but I’m pretty big. Mama thinks I should stay with the herd, but the other reindeer talk a lot about Santa Claus and his reindeer—I just have to see them for myself. So I’m going north.

(The story of a 9-year-old boy whose dog passes away shortly before Christmas.)

“Your mother tells me that you would like to ask me a question,” the pastor continued. “Is that true?”

Tommy wiped his eyes on his sleeve, then looked up. “Pastor Mike, why did Rudy have to die?”

The pastor put a gentle hand on Tommy’s shoulder. “I’m afraid death is a part of life, son. Everyone and everything eventually dies.”

“But I asked God to heal him. I prayed every night. And God didn’t—”

Tommy sobbed. His mother handed him a tissue from her purse, which he used to wipe his eyes and blow his nose. Pastor Mike sat up in his chair and waited until the room was quiet again. Then he declared, “I’m sorry, Tommy, but you’re mistaken.”

Ruth was glad she was not in town tonight, and not just because she wanted to be here, under the night sky. The Romans were conducting a census, so they could make sure everyone paid their taxes. Jewish tradition required all of the Israelites to return to their ancestral home for the census. That meant that a lot of people from out-of-town were in Bethlehem this week, and it was very crowded. Ruth didn't like crowds.

Suddenly the resting sheep rose to their feet and all started bleating loudly and moving down the hill away from Ruth and her brothers. They grabbed their crooks and jumped to their feet, looking around for the cause of the excitement. At the top of the hill, not far away, they saw a man—or what seemed at first to be a man. But this was no ordinary man. A light seemed to shine all around him, a light brighter than the moon.

He had no weapon. He made no attempt to hurt or frighten the youths. Yet Ruth and her brothers remained frozen in place, unable to move or speak. Then the "man" spoke, "Children, I have a message for you from God."
